Strengthening the Role of Traveler Voices in the Future of Aviation

Navigating the Skies: What to Expect for Spring Break 2026

Spring break travel season is approaching, and airports across the United States are preparing for an increase in passengers. According to Airlines for America, an estimated 171 million travelers are expected to fly between March 1 and April 30.

What This Means for Travelers

With airports getting busier and flights filling up, travelers should expect crowded terminals at major airports across the country. Discussions are still taking place on Capitol Hill regarding funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees Transportation Security Administration operations. Decisions made in Washington can affect airport operations, particularly when it comes to staffing levels and the speed of security screening.

If staffing levels are affected, that could lead to longer security lines at airports that are already handling high passenger volumes.

Add to that the possibility of higher last-minute fares on popular routes and the usual delays that come with peak travel periods, and spring break travel can quickly become stressful.

There is some good news for travelers. Domestic airfare is down about 4 percent compared with last year, according to recent reports. Even with economic uncertainty, many people are still taking trips they planned months ago. With that level of demand, flexibility and preparation can make a big difference.

At Affordable Skies, we often hear from travelers who say the most stressful part of flying is not the flight itself - it's the uncertainty that can come with busy airports, long lines, and last-minute schedule changes. Those experiences are exactly why our organization conducts research, provides education, and engages in advocacy to ensure traveler perspectives are part of aviation industry and policy discussions.

If you haven't yet taken our recent survey, you can do so here.

Tips for a Smoother Trip

  • Be flexible with bookings - If possible, keep your travel dates and times flexible. Choosing fares that allow changes or purchasing travel insurance can help if plans shift.

  • Stay informed - Keep an eye on travel advisories and airline updates, particularly if weather or international events could affect your route.

  • Plan ahead at the airport - Give yourself extra time to get through security and navigate crowded terminals. The viral airport theory trend suggesting travelers arrive minutes before their flight may sound appealing, but it is risky and not worth jeopardizing your trip.

  • Pack essentials - During busy travel periods, delays can happen. Keep essentials in your carry on, including medications, snacks, and a change of clothes.

What Travelers Should Keep in Mind

The increase in spring break travel is a positive sign for the aviation industry, but it also means airports and flights will be operating near capacity. Crowded terminals, longer lines, and occasional delays are all part of the reality during peak travel periods.

For travelers, planning ahead makes a difference. Allowing extra time at the airport, staying informed through airline apps, and packing a few essentials in a carry on can help reduce stress if travel plans change.

Courtesy also plays a role in making air travel more comfortable for everyone. As U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently noted on X, “Everyone deserves a little peace at 35,000 feet. Remember, civility is the best carry on."

Affordable Skies works to ensure traveler perspectives are included in the decisions that shape air travel. With preparation and a little patience, passengers can still navigate the spring break rush.
